A reading of nineteenth-century Spanish narrative, with emphasis on novels published in the later part of the period. We will discuss how these works come together to configure new ideas of female identity and its social domains, and how these discussions interact with the historical, political, and socio-economic development of the moment, as aristocratic rule is gradually being replaced by a new bourgeois order and Spain is facing new challenges in its quest for modernity. This will be a Writing Intensive (WI) course — this does not mean that you will be writing more pages than usual, but it does mean that writing will be more integrated into our class discussion, and writing assignments will be built around feedback and revision opportunities.
